The Best Chocolate Cheesecake Recipe

Imagine the classic New York cheesecake infused with layers of rich chocolate flavor — this dessert truly lives up to its name. If you're a chocolate lover, this is your dream come true!

This is one of my favorite recipes that always impresses guests. The velvety texture combined with deep chocolate notes creates an unforgettable experience. Each slice practically melts in your mouth!

Cheesecake Ingredients

Main Ingredients

You only need five simple ingredients for this double chocolate cheesecake:

  • Cream Cheese: Full-fat cream cheese (like Philadelphia) gives the best results. Vegan options work too. Avoid fat-free versions as they can make the mixture watery.
  • Yogurt: Any kind will do — Greek yogurt, coconut yogurt, or even sour cream. For extra richness, try mashed banana.
  • Cocoa Powder: Dutch-process cocoa gives a deeper flavor, but regular unsweetened cocoa works well too. It adds that brownie-like chocolate taste.
  • Sugar: Use regular cane sugar, coconut sugar, maple syrup, or honey. For a sugar-free version, erythritol or xylitol are great substitutes.
  • Vanilla Extract: Always go for pure vanilla extract instead of artificial essence for a more natural flavor profile.

Chocolate Crust

While any graham cracker-style crust works, I prefer using crushed Oreo cookies for a richer base.

  • 24 Oreo or other chocolate sandwich cookies
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or coconut oil

Crush the cookies (including the filling) into fine crumbs and mix with melted butter. Press firmly into a 9-inch springform pan lined with parchment paper. Chill until ready to use.

Flavor Variations

Customize your cheesecake to suit your mood with these fun twists:

  • Add 1 cup Nutella instead of part of the yogurt for a hazelnut twist. Peanut butter also works for a "Reese's" style cheesecake.
  • Drizzle caramel sauce over the top and sprinkle chopped pecans for a turtle-inspired version.
  • Make it high-protein by using Greek yogurt or replacing half the yogurt with soft tofu. Substitute some cocoa powder with protein powder.
  • Mix in chunks of dark, milk, and white chocolate for a colorful triple chocolate effect.
  • Add ½ teaspoon peppermint extract and chocolate shavings for a refreshing mint chocolate variation.

Toppings Ideas

  • Fresh raspberries or strawberries
  • Shredded coconut
  • Cherries, blueberries, or banana slices
  • Strawberry jam
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Chocolate truffles
  • Chocolate ganache or frosting

How to Make Chocolate Cheesecake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place a roasting pan filled with water on the lower rack to create steam.
  2. Prepare the crust and press it into a 9-inch springform pan. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth. Add sugar and continue beating until fluffy.
  4. Mix in yogurt, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract until fully combined. Don’t overmix to prevent cracking.
  5. Pour the mixture over the prepared crust and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes, then turn off the oven without opening the door. Let the cheesecake sit inside for another 5 minutes.
  7. Cool completely at room temperature before refrigerating for at least 4 hours or overnight.

Storage Tips

Store leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to four days. You can also freeze individual slices for up to two months. Thaw completely before serving.
